Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

GO Outdoors York

Foss Bank, York YO31 7JB, UK – 0344 387 6830

Came in today to have a look at tents, spent ages looking & was very undecided. Had some great assistance from staff (Rick) who took plenty of time to give great advice on what I was looking for, he even got me a great deal on a big bundle. (Thank you!) Very happy customer :)

we went to York for a day trip while we were on holiday but as it was raining we decided to visit go outdoors whislt the rain was on , we looked at all the great stuff on sale and even made a few purchases one which was a considerable buy at a great discounted price my son who bought the item was over the moon at getting something he was looking for for some time but was out of his budget we left the shop and travelled to our holiday accommodation and started to assemble his purchase now this item was required to be used immediately so imagine our disappointment when we found there was a part missing (devastation) shock horror the boys face anyway we phoned the shop and spoke to Rachel hope thats the correct spelling sorry if its not , this lady not only did not panic but instead made a great impression on me as she not only asked if she could phone me back after looking for the part but on finding it she then drove from york to thirsk area to deliver the part and made a 14 year old boy very very happy indeed so a great big thank you goes to Rachel our knight in shining blue uniform thank you very much Rachel we hope you got home alright and if we are in the area again yes we will be visiting go outdoors York

Mountain Warehouse YORK CITY

7 Davygate, York YO1 8QR, UK – 01904 541302

Excellent, excellent staff. Went in with a shopping list for daughters guides trip. Lady working took the time to hunt for everything I needed and even went beyond just grabbing stuff but rooted around for the sakes items. So pleased, I went back again for other stuff we normally purchase elsewhere

Love this shop great value and quality to topped off with great service

2 St. Helen’s Square, York YO1 8QP, UK – 01904 232899

I'm a small guy and although they have a reasonable range they never seem to have anything in my size. Prices are okay and the bags and kit are good.

Good selection of Outdoor Wear. Very friendly helpful staff

Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

York Rowntree Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Site

Terry Ave, York YO23 1JQ, UK – 01904 658997

Small site but well kept. Perfect for visiting York City. Easy access to local shops and cafes. Only stayed one night but would love to stay again.

This is a great caravan park, right next to the river and a few minutes walk into town. The prices are a little higher than we would normally expect, but the place was clean and tidy - and well run. Lots of 'rules', though. No shop, or entertainment area, but for all that, a very nice place, only spoiled, a little bit, by the very noisy building work on the site next door. I recommend it.

Chowdene Camping and Caravan Site

Malton Rd, Huntington, York YO32 9TD, UK – 01904 289359

Great for walking into york, park and ride just round corner

Very clean site with good facilities and a cracking view.

Riverside Camping and Caravan Park

Ferry Ln, Bishopthorpe, York YO23 2SB, UK – 07918 686185

Nice, small caravan park close to river in edge of York (lovely 3 Mike walk in to York from campsite - just follow the river). Very friendly staff. A little cramped, a little untidy and some noise from other (seasonal) campers but didn't spoil it overall for our brief stay. The neighbouring village is very nice and has a number of pubs for eating and drinking.

Did an airbnb here. Was really nice be sure to bring an extra layer of clothing!
